在翻译过程中对原著意象的解读也直接影响到译著的表达效果。一般而言，中国古诗词都是景中有情，情中带景；在情感表达上不如英诗直白，往往借助于其它事物来借题发挥，间接抒感，给人一种韵味无穷的朦胧感。朱光潜指出：“西诗以直白胜，中诗以婉约胜；西诗以深刻胜，中诗以微妙胜；西诗以铺陈胜，中诗以简隽胜。”许渊冲认为，“中国古诗词言外有意，英诗却是言止意穷。即中诗意胜于言，英诗意等于言。中国诗人通过描写客观世界来映射人物的主观世界，西方诗人直白地、深刻地刻画人物的内心世界。换言之，中诗往往借景抒情，英诗则直抒情怀。”因此，在中诗英译中，译者需同时考虑到它们之间由于东西方民族文化积淀、思维方式和审美隋趣的不同所显现的差异。
国内李清照词英译共有22位译者。根据译者采取的不同的翻译方法，可明确地分为三类：韵体翻译法、散文体翻译法及自由体翻译法。我们以为，不论是韵体译者、散文体译者，还是自由体译者，中国译者总体上倾向于遵循“忠实性”翻译原则。我们所说的“忠实性”概念远比一般所谓的“忠实性”在外延上要宽泛得多，它主要针对忠实于中国传统文化而言。作为中国译者，长期受到优秀的民族传统文化的熏陶和民族感情的培养，内心都怀有一份深厚的民族传统文化情结，在李清照词英译中，形成了译者的强烈的“忠实性”情结：以杨宪益为代表的自由体译诗派主张译诗忠实于李清照词内容上的传达：翁显良的散体译法强调译诗在“不违原文本旨”（即忠实于原文内容）的前提上更注重诗歌意象和节奏的表达；以许渊冲为代表的韵体译诗派在忠实内容的基础上侧重强调译诗在诗歌韵式上的忠实追求。
文学翻译是艺术，主要表现在灵活运用译文语言，在不违原文本旨的限度内进行再创作，力求取得与原文相似的效果。既然是再创作，就要重新构思；既然原意不可违，就必须深入探索，反复揣摩：既然以趣不乖本为限，就不受原文表层结构的约束：既然要求效果近似原文，就必须因译文语言之宜，用译文语言之长，充分发挥译文语言的优势。”“形似的是内容，是思想感情，是境界气象；不形似的是形式，是表层结构，是文词句法。”为了更好地表达原诗的精神，译诗“押韵不押韵，分行不分行，一概无所谓。他用散体翻译过李清照《渔家傲・雪里已知春信至》词一首。
